Lyrics

The Ship Pomona

O you who live at home on land come listen unto me
As I relate our sorrows great upon the raging sea
‘Twas in the ship Pomona from Liverpool we sailed
And left our friends in Ireland our sorrows to bewail

On April 27 the weather it being clear
We took our last and fond farewell of them we most loved dear
With music and with dancing we were in mirth and glee
In hopes to see Columbia’s shore, the land of liberty

380 passenger besides a gallant crew
As we set sail from Liverpool right well the wind it blew
But now our friends and parents for us they may deplore
While our bodies they lie moldering along the Wexford shore

Bridge

For on that very evening a storm it did arise
The raging sea ran mountains high and took us by surprise
The captain cries all hands on deck, come let the pumps be manned
When suddenly our ship she struck upon a bank of sand

It is most dreadful to relate, to hear the bitter cries
Of children and their parents of husbands and their wives
Saying now alas we are undone the ocean is our doom
Far from our friends and families we meet a watery tomb

To end these feeling verses good people we implore
That you’ll pray for those poor passengers who left the shamrock shore
380 souls in all they met a watery grave
and your prayers for them good people most fervently we crave
